America’s Students Need School and Campus Modernization

Far too many students are learning in schools with leaky roofs and peeling paint in overcrowded classrooms with out-of-date or no technology. Senator Brown (D-OH) and Representative DeLauro (D-CT) have introduced the Fix America’s Schools Today Act (S. 1597/H.R. 2948), which would provide needed funds to ensure students the learning environments so essential to their success. A bi-partisan group of politicians in Virginia has also called for a reworking of federal tax policy to support school modernization in an Op-Ed published by Politico.

Schools should not have to “make do”. To fix the problem of this enormous deficit we must invest in education. This education has to include every child on American soil, and provide them all with an equal opportunity to succeed. Educated Americans are much less likely to need the social welfare safety nets, they are less likely to end up in the expensive prison systems, and they are statistically wealthier meaning that they will own more property and pay more taxes. Instead of bailing out the banks, or cutting taxes for the wealthy we should invest in our youth.

Where were these dramatic pleas a few years ago, before our economy collapsed under the weight of the enormous new deficit? It troubles me when government workers become narrow-minded and fail to look at the big picture. Schools will have to make do, like everybody else, and we must stop educating the children of immigrants, (legal or illegal) for free. These children should be educated in the country of their parents’ citizenship, or pay for private schooling. That is what children born abroad to U.S. citizen parents must do.
